About Soy Wax

Why Natural Soy Wax...

Soy wax is a vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans. After harvesting, the beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes. The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated.

The hydrogenation process converts some of the fatty acids in the oil from unsaturated to saturated. This process dramatically alters the melting point of the oil, making it a solid at room temperature. The leftover bean husks are commonly used as animal feed. Soy's greatest advantage is that it is completely renewable.

While the global reserves of oil shrink and paraffin prices increase, the only limit to the soy supply is how much we choose to grow. In addition to sustainability, a well-made soy candle will burn cleanly and slowly. While the performance and beauty of soy candles speak for themselves, soy wax is truly an eco-friendly, biodegradable and sustainable product.

The Benefits & Facts:

  • GMO FREE -Our soy wax contains no GMO material (Genetically Modified Organisms). See http://www.saynotogmos.org for more information
  • Clean Burning – Soy wax is non-toxic. This means no carcinogens are produced from burning soy candles. It burns much cleaner than paraffin, with no petrol-carbon soot which can blacken walls, ceilings, and furniture, contaminate ventilation ductwork in your home, as well as add toxic carcinogens into the air you breathe.
  • Burns Longer - Soy candles burn 30-50 % longer than other waxs
  • No unnatural additives
  • Kosher certified
  • Little or no soot is produced from burning soy
  • Water Soluble - Soy candle wax is water soluble which means it’s very easy to remove from materials and other surfaces.
  • Biodegradable -Since soybeans are vegetables, soy wax is naturally biodegradable.
  • Renewable Resource – Unlike paraffin wax which consists of petroleum, Soy beans are a renewable resource
  • Great Scent Throw - Soy candles hold colour and scent better than paraffin
  • Animal fat is not an ingredient in soy wax

Great Scent Throw

When it's said that a candle scent "throws well", this means it fills the room with a strong, lasting scent. Soy wax candles not only have a great scent throw, but also have a cleaner smell. It's been noted by many that paraffin wax will give them headaches. Of course it's not the scent itself, but the additional chemicals the paraffin is putting off. Because soy burns so clean, you'll get a cleaner scent as well.

The Dangers of Paraffin Wax Candles

There are three main reasons many people avoid buying petroleum (paraffin) products:

  • Petroleum smoke/exhaust contains many carcinogenic toxins and produces ugly black soot
  • Petroleum is not a renewable resource and it is of a limited supply
  • Burning petroleum products creates air pollution and contributes to global warming

Paraffin candles contain up to 11 carcinogenic compounds. These 11 compounds have been deemed 'toxic air contaminants'. An air quality researcher, David Krause, has documented evidence that candle soot particles contain many of the same compounds given off from burning diesel fuel.

Health hazards are being created when paraffin (petroleum-based wax) is mixed with synthetic fragrance (some not even meant for combustion), and are compounded with chemical fixatives, synthetic glosses and bleached cotton wicks. Health problems have been more evident in the past five or so years due to the increase in popularity of highly scented candles. Hundreds of thousands of dollars of home and furniture damage have been reported, causing a battle with insurance companies and retailers of the candles.

Unfortunately, a large percentage of the human population is not aware of candle ingredients, although awareness is growing. One reason is that candle ingredients are not required to be listed, and labels are often worded in such a way that some consumers think they are buying healthy, aromatherapy candles, when in reality the candle is mostly a petroleum wax. Even if a candle is labeled as being made of beeswax, often there is paraffin as well. The wicks are usually made of chemically grown cotton that has been bleached using dioxins. Wicks that have a metal, or zinc core, contain small amounts of lead. Most department stores provide no other option than to buy paraffin candles. However, some natural food stores have began carrying plant-wax candles.

Live In Spirit's soy wax contains no lead, no petroleum, no chemical/synthetic fixatives or glosses, no animal products/by-products, and we use Zinc free, all natural wicks. Our plant wax is 100% biodegradable and produces very little soot with 0% petrol-soot emissions. Soy wax burns cooler so it's safer, burns up to 50% longer and has a better fragrance throw. It's water-soluble and can easily be cleaned up, making recycling possible.

Soy candles are simply better for you, your family and your environment.
